Although Xiaomi has gone on record to say that it is not working on an affordable Mini version of the Mi 6, last year’s Mi 5 is set to get yet another update in the Mi 5X, a phone that the company will launch in China on July 26. The Mi 5X, although considered as some form of Mi 5, will come with a Mi 6-like dual camera system on the rear hinting that it could be the Mini Mi 6 that fans and enthusiasts have been asking for.

Xiaomi has taken to Weibo to confirm the July 26 launch of the Mi 5X. Also Xiaomi’s website for mainland China has started teasing the phone, giving away key design elements – especially from the behind – a couple of odd specs or two. The Mi 5X, for one, will come with a full metal unibody design – a stark departure from the Mi 5 and Mi 6’s glass and metal bodies – and a rear mounted fingerprint scanner. The Mi 5X, will at least, have one gold variant. Also, prominent is a dual camera system on the rear with Xiaomi hinting that the second lens would be of a telephoto nature, much like it is in the case of the Mi 6.

The Mi 5X will also mark the debut of MIUI 9, Xiaomi’s next major iteration of Xiaomi’s mobile operating system. Xiaomi had only recently announced that the company will officially start rolling out MIUI 9 before August 16. “When is MIUI 9 coming, is one of the most commonly asked questions across sub-forums on MIUI Forum. Everyone is excited and looking forward to the next major update,” the company wrote on its official forum.

Not much is known about what MIUI 9 will be bringing to the table. Rumour has it that it would bring split screen multitasking and picture-in-picture mode features, although Xiaomi is yet to formally make an announcement regarding the same.

Xiaomi has meanwhile also announced a list of phones that qualify to get the Android 7.0 update. There are 14 Xiaomi phones in all that make the cut. While 10 of them will get Android 7.0, only four will be eligible for an Android 7.1 update in the days to come.
