Long queues outside ATMs have reduced to some extent, however, what hasn’t reduced is the craze around the new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 currency notes. Last week when the Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes came into circulation, people started taking and posting selfies on internet with the new notes. Now there are some apps that play a video of PM Modi’s speech on “scanning a new currency note”, except they don’t. It is fake and you should think twice before downloading it.
There are several apps on the Google Play Store with names in variation of Modi Ki Note, Modi Ji Keynote and Modi Keynote. Although some of the apps’ description says that it’s for “entertainment purpose only”. But as is the thing with most people on internet nobody likes to read the fine print, even when it is not so fine to be accidentally left unread.
The description reads, “Download app and scan your 2000 and 500 new currency and now you can see our prime minister Narender Modi ji speak on your note. and this is the message from prime minister Narender Modi ji for the people in India. against black money and corruption.”
While we stand with the fight against black money and corruption, we don’t put our faith in the app’s said abilities to ‘scan’ a currency note. The app plays PM Modi’s speech regardless of the presence of a currency note underneath the camera. This means it ‘scans’ the note and plays the video even when there is no note to be scanned.
Although the makers have already specified it’s for entertainment only, we suggest you to be wary of the app. The application seeks you wi-fi and camera permission, which in itself is a privacy concern.
As most of the free apps, Modi Ki Note is also full of ads, which is another privacy concern since it is not coming from a known or verified developer. So we suggest you to not fall for this prank as it may cost more than just your data and time.
