The OnePlus 5 is coming to India soon. It is most likely coming this month given the pace at which OnePlus is dropping the hints about its next flagship phone nowadays. If there is some delay then it will be coming in July first week. That is for sure. A lot is already known about the OnePlus 5. Some of the information has come through leaks. Some has directly come from the official sources like the OnePlus CEO Pete Lou and its co-founder Pete Lou. Another bit – the presence of the dual camera on the phone – was confirmed earlier by India Today Tech. But one bit about which we don’t know much right now is the price of the OnePlus 5, particularly the price of the phone in India. There has been some chatter about the price of the OnePlus 5, but this is one aspect where nothing is certain.
So what is going to be the price of the OnePlus 5 in India? Let’s make some (educated) guess on the basis of what all we know right now. There are some dots we can connect to figure out some price points of the OnePlus 5. Although for now there is nothing official about them.
The price will be relatively higher: This is rumour we have heard. A website earlier reported that the OnePlus 5 is going to be the costliest phone from OnePlus so far. And it makes sense. The chances are that the price of the OnePlus 5 is going to be higher than the price at which the OnePlus 3T debuted earlier. Or at which the OnePlus 3 or the OnePlus 2 were launched. The reason is simple: prices of the flagship phones are going up. Components are getting higher. All those dual-camera modules and that latest and greatest Qualcomm snapdragon 835 cost more than what the Snapdragon 800 or a 16-megapixel camera cost two years. So, it is almost certain that the OnePlus 5 will not have a starting price of Rs 27,999 or even Rs 29,999.
But it won’t cost as much as an iPhone: This is also a certainty. While the OnePlus 5 is bound to cost relatively more compared to the OnePlus 3, it won’t cost Rs 60,000. Aggressive pricing is still one of the key selling points for the OnePlus phones and the OnePlus 5 too will aim to deliver the same value for money preposition that a phone like the OnePlus 3T offered. So, even as it takes an aim at the iPhone 7, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S8 and similar other phones, the OnePlus 5 will not cost Rs 60,000 or Rs 70,000. The flagship phone will most likely have the flagship specs but at relatively more affordable prices.
So what’s the OnePlus 5 price in India
This is a Rs 1 crore question. Literally. No, really. The correct answer to this question will probably win a OnePlus fan Rs 1 crore in a contest that the company has announced. Sadly, right now the answer to this question is something that no one, probably not even OnePlus people in India, know. But there are some hints. And these are India specific hints, because India is unique market.
The biggest piece of information that we have as far as the price of OnePlus 5 in India is concerned is the price of the OnePlus 3T. This is phone that OnePlus is kind of pulling out from most of the markets in the world. But not in India. In India, the company has confirmed that OnePlus 3T will remain on sale even after the OnePlus 5 hits the market. In fact, it will probably continue to be on sale until the end of this year.
Another piece of information here is that the OnePlus 3T will not get a price cut, or even if there is one it is going to be very marginal. This means the OnePlus 3T (64GB) will continue to sell for Rs 29,999 and the OnePlus 3T (128GB) will continue to sell for a price of around Rs 35,000.
Given the fact that OnePlus 3T will continue to have a price of around Rs 35,000, it is almost a surety that the OnePlus 5 will debut at a higher price. We have also established that the that OnePlus 5 is not likely to cost Rs 50,000 or Rs 55,000 because doing so will go against everything that brand OnePlus stands for so far.
This means the likely price points for the OnePlus 5 are going to fall between Rs 35,000 and Rs 50,000 in India.
Now let’s narrow it down somewhat. It is almost a certainty that the OnePlus 5 will come in two variants, just like the OnePlus 3T. One will have 64GB internal storage inside it, and this will be the cheaper variant. The other one will come with 128GB and that will cost somewhat more. If the OnePlus 3T is any indication, that difference is likely to be Rs 5,000.
So the OnePlus 5 price in India…
Connecting all the dots, taking into account all the information that is available, figuring out everything that the OnePlus 3T offers to consumers right now at a price of Rs 35,000 and whatever the OnePlus 5 is expected to offer, it looks like that the OnePlus 5 price in India could be closer to Rs 40,000. That will be the starting price with the variant that has more storage likely to cost slightly more.
How much more is something I am not sure right. There is also a chance that OnePlus 5 may have a starting price of around Rs 35,000, but that is going to be the case only if OnePlus decides to go more aggressive. And this time around it doesn’t seem that OnePlus will be as aggressive as it was with the OnePlus 1. Also, a starting price of around Rs 35,000 will possibly leave OnePlus 3T reeling, unless there is some hefty price cut on it, which again seems unlikely.
So, to repeat again: OnePlus 5 India price would most likely around Rs 40,000, with the variant with more storage costing up to Rs 5,000 more. That’s our guess. The good bit is that we won’t have to wait too long now to find out the actual price. The OnePlus 5 will most likely launch around the end of this month in global markets as well as in India.
