A few weeks after their global unveiling, Lenovo owned Motorola has launched the Moto G5S Plus and Moto G5 Plus in India. Both smartphones are iterative updates of the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus which were launched in India around six months ago. They come with improved cameras, bigger displays and an all metal design. The Moto G5S Plus is also the first dual camera smartphone from Motorola in India.

With the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus, Motorola aims to strengthen its presence in the increasingly competitive budget smartphone segment in India and compete with the likes of the Redmi Note 4 and the recently launched Nokia 6. Let us examine these two smartphones in detail. Here are the top 10 features of the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus:

  1. Design wise, both the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus are a big step up from their predecessors. Unlike the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus which feature a metal back plate and plastic on the top, bottom and sides, the G5S and G5S Plus are crafted from a single piece of aluminum. Motorola claims the metal is ‘painstakingly polished for a flawless finish’ and that both smartphones are stronger than ever.

  2. Both the Moto G5S and G5S Plus are fairly chunky. They are 8.2mm at their thinnest point and 9.5mm at their thickest point and come with a round camera unit at the rear that juts out a fair bit from the chassis. They also have a slightly curved back and rounded edges which aids in-hand feel. Both smartphones look and feel more premium than their predecessors thanks to the all metal construction despite the slightly thicker frame.

  3. Both the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus feature bigger displays as compared to their predecessors. The Moto G5S Plus has a 5.5-inch fullHD display as compared to the 5.2-inch display found on the Moto G5 Plus while the Moto G5S comes with a 5.2-inch display in comparison to the 5-inch 1080p panel on the Moto G5. Both displays are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection against nicks and scratches.

  4. The Moto G5S Plus and Moto G5S have received substantial updates in the imaging department. The Moto G5S comes with an all new 16MP rear camera with an aperture of f/2.0, phase detection auto focus and an LED flash paired with a 5MP front facing wide-angle camera. The front camera also comes with an LED flash which should make the Moto G5S an attractive option for selfie lovers.

  5. The Moto G5S Plus comes with a dual camera setup at the rear – two 13MP sensors with an aperture of f/2.0 that work together to offer features such as selective focus, background replacement and selective black and white colouring. The rear camera setup comes with a dual-LED flash and can capture 4K video at 30 frames per second. On the front, there is an 8MP wide-angle sensor which also comes with an LED flash. The front camera also allows you to take 165-degree panoramic selfies.

  6. Both smartphones come with fairly beefy internals for the price. The Moto G5S Plus is powered by the Snapdragon 625 processor paired with the Adreno 506 GPU, 4GB of RAM and a 3,000mAh battery with TurboCharge support. Motorola claims that a 15-minute charge can give you up to 6 hours of use. The smartphone comes with 64GB of internal storage which can be expanded via a microSD card (of up to 128GB).

  7. The Moto G5S is powered by the Snapdragon 430 processor paired with the Adreno 505 GPU, 4GB of RAM and a 3,000mAh battery with TurboCharge support which is a step up from the 2,800mAh unit found on the Moto G5. The smartphone comes with 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded via a microSD card (of up to 128GB).

  8. As with all Motorola smartphones of late, the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus run a near stock version of Android. Both smartphones come with the latest version of Android – 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box with an update to Android 8.0 Oreo expected soon. Motorola has left Android largely untouched with only a few modifications here and there. These include gestures like flicking your wrist to activate the camera, a karate chop to turn on the flashlight, an always on display called Moto Display and more. The Moto G5S Plus also comes with a Night Display feature which acts as a blue light filter.

  9. Both the Moto G5S Plus and Moto G5S Plus support 4G LTE, VoLTE, GPS, A-GPS, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.1. Both smartphones also come with a 3.5mm headphone jack which is fast becoming extinct in today’s smartphone world and a fingerprint sensor. NFC is conspicuous by its absence.

  10. The Moto G5S Plus is available in one variant – with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage for Rs 15,999. The Moto G5S on the other hand has been priced at Rs 13,999 and comes with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The Moto G5S Plus will be available exclusively via Amazon India. It will also be available via Motorola’s offline retail store Moto Hub. The Moto G5S will be available from all leading retail outlets, Motorola’s offline store Moto Hub, as well as from Amazon India.
