Motorola last week posted that 12 of its Moto phones will be upgraded to the latest Android 8 Oreo software. The list proved to be saddening for a lot of Moto users, especially the G4 series users. The list didn’t include any phones from the Moto G4 family. This created a lot of talks among the smartphone users, that for a phone not even 2 year old and not getting the Oreo update is unacceptable. However, shutting all rumours, Motorola on Monday official confirmed that they will be upgrading the Moto G4 Plus to Android Oreo.
Yes, only the Moto G4 Plus will get the Android Oreo’s sweetness. This means, that the Moto G4 and G4 Play users will never get Oreo update and will be stuck to Android Nougat. Motorola confirmed the news via a blog post. The post reads — “It’s been brought to our attention that there were some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for Moto G4 Plus. This was an oversight on our part and we apologize for this miscommunication. It’s our general practice for the Moto G family to get one major OS upgrade per device, but it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading Moto G4 Plus to Android O.”
The post didn’t mention any details about Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus anywhere, which means that these two phones will not get Android Oreo’s sweetness. Motorola further noted, “Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit it into our upgrade schedule. Watch our software upgrade page for more information.” So now that it is confirmed that the Moto G4 Plus will be upgraded to Android Oreo, the company isn’t sure on when the upgrade the G4 Plus users. However, going by the timeline other companies are upgrading select phones – Moto G4 Plus should also get the Oreo update wither by the end of this year or by the beginning of next year.
As per the list of phone to get Oreo update – as posted by Motorola – 12 Moto phone will get the new software. The Motorola phones that will get the Oreo update include: Moto Z, Moto Z Droid, Moto Z Force Droid, Moto Z Play, Moto Z Play Droid, Moto Z2 Play, Moto Z2 Force Edition, Moto X4, Moto G5, Moto G5 Plus, Moto G5S, and the Moto G5S Plus. After the list was published, people noticed that the entire G4 family – which was launched less than 18 months ago, was missing.
This was shocking for many because Motorola at the time of announcing these devices promised to upgrade the G4 family phones to Android Oreo. Following the release of the list, Motorola also altered the contents of an infographic regarding the G4 Plus which earlier confirmed the coming of Oreo update to the G4 phones. Those posts were taken down or reframed.
In the previous years we have seen the Android updates to Moto phones coming in a few months after Google’s final update to its software. The scenario will be the same this year as well. All the Moto phones – as mentioned in the list will be upgraded to Oreo only this fall. “We’re happy to confirm Android 8.0 Oreo will be joining our fleet of Motorola smartphones, starting this fall,” writes Motorola in its blog.
Meahwhile, it should also be noted that Moto E4, and E4 Plus that were announced just a few months ago also didn’t make it to the list. Both the phones currently run on Nougat, and is expected to stick to that in the long run. There seems to be no Android Oreo update coming to Moto E4 or E4 Plus.
