MediaTek has re-armed its old low cost chip — MT6737 — with a new graphics controller that supports 18:9 aspect ratio for displays. The announcement made at the ongoing India Mobile Congress 2017 in New Delhi, also includes the launch of the Helio P23 chipset.
MediaTek calls the new chip MT6739 and says it is built for ‘India’s rapidly growing 4G market’. Like the MT6737, the chip has a 64bit quad-core processor made on the ARM Cortex-A53 instruction set and supports Cat.4 LTE modem. The difference is that the operating frequency of the CPU is increased to 1.5GHz from 1.35GHz and there is dual VoLTE and Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) on the network.
The launch of MT6739 signals more low cost phones are in tow that will adopt a nearly bezel-less design on their smartphone displays, something similar to the Micromax Canvas Infinity. Though the maximum resolution supported by the chip is HD+ (1440×720), a slight extension of the HD (1280×720) resolution dimension used on a 16:9 display.
The chip also bring in support for dual camera setup, something that is present right now on the Helio series and the most affordable being the Helio P25 used on the Lenovo K8 Plus. But the maximum resolution support is 8-megapixel + 0.3-megapixel (VGA) sensors for the dual camera setup.
The Helio P23 on the other hand has a 2.3GHz Octa core processor with ARM Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. It is made on the TSMC 16nm FinFET process, competing directly with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 450 which uses a 14nm process. In fact according to a report from Phoneareana, MediaTek had to reduce the price of P23 before its release as the prices of Snapdragon 450 were substantially low
The Helio P23 also comes with dual-camera support (13-megapixel+13-megapixel), LPDDR4x RAM of up to 6GB, Dual SIM, Dual 4G VoLTE, H.264 playback and Full HD+ display resolution.
