Samsung Galaxy S8, which will be the company’s top phone for 2017, is coming soon. And today there is a leak that gives an idea of how that phone is going to look like, as well as some of its features. While a lot of people are hoping for a radical design makeover of the Galaxy S series with the S8, from the leaked details it seems that the design changes will be incremental. Although, in some areas they will also be quite significant.
The details — and the 3D renders of the Galaxy S8 — have been leaked by GSMArena. The renders posted by website show that the biggest change in the Galaxy S8, at least in terms of design is going to the removal of the home button. The phone doesn’t have the home button that has graced the Galaxy S phones since 2010 when the original was launched. With the home button moving to the screen, the two navigation buttons — menu and back — also move to the screen. However, a more interesting bit to note here is that the fingerprint scanner too has been moved to the screen, with a layer of glass possibly hiding it.
Other than detailing the big change, the renders also give some idea of the Galaxy S8 features. The phone seems to sport stereo speakers, with speakers grills on both top and bottom edges of the S8. Additionally we can see a USB port — is it USB 2.0 — as well as a 3.5mm jack. Talking of that USB port, although its design looks like that of the USB 2.0, it is certain that the port will be USB C. On the rear, there is one camera as well as a small module that seem to contain flash and heart rate sensor, similar to what the Galaxy S7 has.
Overall, the Galaxy S8 seems like an attractive phone. It has more rounded edges and a curved screen, which seem to go deeper into the metal frame compared to what we get with the Galaxy S7 Edge. Given that the physical home and navigation buttons are gone, the screen also seems slightly larger.
For Samsung, the Galaxy S8 is a very important phone. Not only this phone is going to compete with the iPhone 8 — or will it be iPhone 7S — it also needs to show the world that all is right with Samsung after the explosive debacle that was Galaxy Note 7. Interestingly, rumours hint that even the iPhone 8 will get rid of the home button this year.
Considering the Galaxy S8 is going to be the flagship Samsung phone, we expect it to come with powerful hardware. It will be either powered by Samsung’s own Exynos processor — Exynos 8895 is a possibility — or it will use Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 835 processor. The Galaxy S8 is also likely o have a waterproof body, 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. There are also rumours of a Plus version of the Galaxy S8, which will also come with two rear cameras, similar to what Apple has in the iPhone 7 Plus.
