Every month TRAI comes out with this automated report on the speed of major internet service providers in India. According to the February data, Jio’s 4G speed was fastest among all telecom service providers in India with its average speed touching 17.42mbps. For Jio this was a return to the form after a dismal January when its speed had plummeted to 8.4 mbps.

In fact, in February Jio’s lead over others was really big. The second best operator in the month was Idea with average speed of 8.5 mbps while Airtel came third with speed of 8.1 mbps. For Jio its performance in February couldn’t have come at a more appropriate moment. The company, which will stop free services after Jio Happy New Offer expires on March 31 is trying to convert its 100 million free users into paid users.

Although the speed is good, there is also something unusual about the TRAI data. For all operators it shows the speed that seem abnormally high. It could be due to the fact that most speed test apps, including those run by TRAI, usually focus on downloading and uploading data at a very fast pace and do not take into account the real-world problems that actual services have to face. This is the reason why an actual service like Netflix, which streams videos, shows different kind of speeds for telecom operators in India. Recently Netflix had released the list of fastest internet service providers in India. The list was topped by Airtel with average speed of little over 2mbps.
