UPDATE:

A new rumour claims that Apple will unveil the iPhone 8 on September 17. An alleged official note sent to Apple staff mentions blackout dates from September 17 to November 4 and it is highly likely that the iPhone 8 keynote will be held between those dates.

The memo, posted online by prolific tipster Benjamin Gaskin says – ” As you know, there are new product announcements and launches in September”.

Rumours and leaks regarding Apple’s upcoming tenth anniversary iPhone 8 have been popping up left right and centre ever since the iPhone 7 was announced last year. One of the most persistent source of debate has been regarding the placement of the TouchID sensor in the iPhone 8.

While some have claimed that Apple is going to embed the sensor underneath the display, others have been apprehensive about such a radical approach, stating that Apple is facing issues in ramping up yield rates of the new sensor.

Now, a new report in Economic Daily News (EDN), spotted by MacRumours, claims that Apple has overcome this particular hurdle and has found a way to successfully embed the TouchID sensor underneath the iPhone 8’s display.

According to EDN, Apple supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing has confirmed the same at a technology convention held in Tapei. MacRumours also claims that in addition to fingerprint recognition, the iPhone 8 will also come with “invisible infrared image sensors to enhance the functionality of the high-pixel camera”. This will also aid augmented reality functions.

This ties in well with past rumours which claim that the iPhone 8’s rear camera will come with ‘3D sensing’ capabilities and new augmented reality features. Apple is also set to boost the quality of the telephoto lens in the iPhone 8, which was a little bit inferior to the wide angle lens on the iPhone 7 Plus.

Apple is also set to follow the example set by the Samsung Galaxy S8 and equip the iPhone 8 with an iris scanner and facial recognition features. MacRumours report also claims that the “iris/facial recognition could be used to augment Touch ID via a high pixel-density front-facing camera”.

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 8 along with the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus in the coming months. The iPhone 8 is expected to sport an edge-to-edge TrueTone OLED display, a radical new bezel-less glass and metal design, wireless charging support, upgraded IP68 waterproofing, an updated 3D Touch module and a Smart Connector for wireless charging and other accessories such as VR headsets.
