This year Apple is set to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the iPhone by releasing a radically updated iPhone 8 with an all new bezel-less design, an OLED display, wireless charging and more. The iPhone 8 has been subject to a multitude of leaks over the past few months and the latest rumour points towards the smartphone coming with an advanced system of 3D lasers on the back for augmented reality applications.
According to Fast Company, these lasers are designed to enhance the user experience when running augmented reality apps. They reportedly work together with the iPhone 8’s rear camera to not only provide improved depth perception but also improved autofocus functionality when taking photos. The report states that the iPhone 8 will use a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) system for the 3D lasers.
This system ties in well with Apple’s announcement of ARKit at WWDC 2017 in June. In Apple’s own words, “ARKit is a new framework that brings augmented reality to hundreds of millions of iOS devices by allowing developers to easily build unparalleled AR experiences.”. Simply put, ARKit allows for stable and fast motion tracking that will make objects look that they are being placed in real space instead of simply hovering over it. In the past, Tim Cook has made his preference for AR over VR very clear.
The iPhone 8 is expected to come with an all new bezel-less design with a polished stainless steel metal frame, an all glass front and a vertical dual camera setup. The smartphone is widely expected to come with a TrueTone OLED display with a screen to body ratio even better than that of the Samsung Galaxy S8.
The iPhone 8 is also rumoured to come with an updated dual camera setup at the rear with an improved telephoto lens, 3D sensing capabilities and as mentioned above, AR and depth of field features. Apple is expected to remove the physical home button on the iPhone 8 and embed the fingerprint sensor underneath the display.
The iPhone 8 might also come with an iris scanner, 3D face recognition, wireless charging, IP68 waterproofing, a smart connector for accessories such as VR headsets and an updated 3D touch module.
