The Forerunner 35 is an all-day activity tracker. Or at least that is what it says as part of the product description. It is a GPS-enabled running watch with built-in Garmin Elevate wrist-based heart rate technology, which allows runners to monitor their heart rate 24 x 7. It counts steps, distance, pace, personal records, calories and intensity minutes. The Forerunner 35 also includes call, texts and mail notifications and music controls right from the device.

The design features a high resolution rectangular display which offers good visibility even in broad daylight. It is lightweight and comfortable to wear and has a good overall finish for a device of its segment. It offers four physical buttons on the sides for navigation. The watch doesn’t have a touchscreen display, which the company believes is not great for running trackers because you don’t want to smudge the display in the middle of an activity with your sweaty hands. It’s another matter that the touchscreen is good enough for Apple Watch Sports edition, which too has been positioned at active users. But for Garmin it somehow doesn’t work.

The company claims a battery life of nine days in watch or activity tracking mode, and up to 13 hours in training mode. Its battery life is pretty decent as per our testing and will last you through the whole marathon. The GPS, on the other hand, takes minutes to get activate, which is not exactly what we will call good performance.

The watch features multiple sport profiles like indoor running, walking, cycling, cardio activities and virtual pacer, which is a great feature to have on race day. Once you feed in your desired speed, the watch will prompt you as soon as you exceed or fall behind your desired speed. The watch allows you to set alerts for time, distance and heart rate that is a good feature to have if you are into heart-rate based training.

The device offers music controls right from the device but the likes of Tom Tom Spark Cardio MUSIC GPS, which are around the same price, allow you to stream music from your watch as well.

Forerunner 35 is priced at Rs 15,990 and will be available in four colours: black, limelight, frost blue and white. We say, the device is perfect for anyone who runs 3 to five times a week and would like to monitor their progress. For everything else, it doesn’t exactly work well enough.
