Facebook has announced that it is rolling out advertisements to the Messenger. The announcement a few hours earlier than the company revealed that it was also launching Messenger Lite for India. The Messenger Lite is a basic version of the full-fledged Messenger and it is designed to work well on low-speed connections, which are fairly common in India.

Just like the Facebook Lite, which works on low RAM phones and low bandwidth internet, the Messenger Lite also aims to reach people in areas with spotty internet or where mobile internet connections are slow. Messenger Lite is under 10MB and it comes with features like voice calling and the active now indicator. The Lite app was previously rolled out in countries such as Vietnam, Nigeria, Peru, Turkey, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, the global announcement of the Messenger ads came on Wednesday. These ads will be found in the home tab of Messenger and when clicked on them, user will be directed to the advertiser’s page or to the chat window where they can directly interact with the brand.

“Starting today, some advertisers will begin to see Messenger ads as part of automatic placements within Power Editor and Ads Manager. Advertisers will be able to add Messenger to campaigns using the Traffic and Conversion objectives and leverage existing targeting options. We will gradually look to extend this to more people over the coming months,” Facebook noted in a blog post.

The company has also explained its ad-suite. It says the Messenger ads will appear on the home tab of Messenger. Second, it highlights the fact that users can directly interact with the brand in a more personalised way of messaging.

Out of the four platforms of Facebook, only WhatsApp remains the one with no ads in it. The other three — Facebook, Instagram and now Messenger — support advertisements. The move aims to monetise Facebook’s 1.2 billion users on Messenger. The company already shows adverts in news feeds on Facebook.
