Facebook Lite, the app designed by Facebook to run on low RAM smartphones has reached more than 200 million monthly active users

Facebook Lite supports more than 50 languages, is smaller than 1 MB and has rolled out in more than 150 countries through Latin America, Asia, Africa and parts of Europe.

“We built a light version of Facebook for people with low bandwidth internet. Now 200 million people use it to connect around the world. I loved hearing this news — what a great start to the day,” Facebook’s  founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a post.

Facebook Lite was launched in June 2015 to make it easier for people to access Facebook in areas with spotty and poor internet connection. It is basically a slimmed-down version of Facebook which works in phones with less RAM and consumes less space compared to the regular Facebook version.

In many areas, networks can be slow or unable to run the functionality found in Facebook for Android, so Facebook Lite gives people a better  Facebook experience when bandwidth is at a minimum.

” We have been working hard to make sure FB Lite is fast and reliable, regardless of where you connect. We want to make sure people can have an easy and good experience, so have integrated more features that other Facebook apps have, while keeping it simple. For example, you can now like, comment, and share posts. We’ve found that people who use FB Lite are also those that share devices. So we’ve made it easier for people to log on and off their accounts,” company said in a statement.

People can access Facebook Lite from the Google Play Store on their Android phones.
